Bali is one of Indonesia’s 17,000 islands. The island lies between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. The population of Bali is almost reaching 4 million people, with more than 90% of the population adhering to Balinese Hinduism while most of the remainder follows Islam. Bali is one of the largest tourist destinations in Asia and is known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes and inspiring art, painting, music, and dance. A tourist haven for decades, it has seen a further surge in tourist numbers in recent years.
East to west, the island is approximately 153 km (95 mi) wide and approximately 112 km (69 mi) from north to south. Bali's central mountains include several peaks over 3,000 metres in elevation, the highest being Mount Agung (3,142 m), or Gunung Agung, the "mother mountain" which is an active volcano. The waters surrounding Bali and its neighboring islands are filled with vibrant sea life and coral reefs. The beaches vary in colours, from white to gold to deep black, lighter in the south and darker in the north.
